Commedia dell’Arte - Workshop 1

Saturday 29 March 2014 10am-4pm

Studio 2, Circomedia, Kingswood Foundation, Britannia Road, Kingswood, Bristol

Workshop cost: £10.00 for each day

This is the first in a series of three one day workshops about Commedia dell'Arte performance - possibly the most complex and demanding of all theatrical performance traditions.

Workshop 1 - the basics: stock characters, masks, movement, gesture, focus,

Workshop 2 - patterns and rhythms, building lazzi

Workshop 3 - scenarios and improvisation

It's hard for us to get this stuff to work. My objective is to embrace the historical traditions - fixed social hierarchies, stylised movement, gesture language etc. - and still make it very high energy and surprising and funny. Commedia shouldn't look like modern theatre and it shouldn't look like pantomime; it should have its own strange, half familiar quality, somewhere between a court dance and a carnival. Above all, it shouldn't feel too safe - for performers or audience.

The workshops will start off by reviewing well trodden ground but will get more collaborative and experimental as we go on. The aim is to find a way of performing Commedia for each participant that is exciting to do and to watch.
